Weight Management

I know, this is one of those subjects that most people just don’t want to talk about. But I do. (Please remember I am not in the medical field or for that matter weight loss field. This is just what I have experienced.)

Over the past few years, my weight has gone down considerably, and is still going down, much slower now though.

My magic bullet was first going on an elimination diet which was, as you’ve read in past posts, quite an eye opener. I lost 16 lbs. in one month – that actually blew me away. But what I didn’t realize is that eating all the foods my body really didn’t like was the reason for my unsatisfactory weight.

Think about it. Eating bread, pasta, grains like rice, and regular white potatoes, are all contributors to additional weight. But there are a few other things you should know. If you suffer from additional weight and you “think” you are eating the right way, you may not be. You probably should be keeping a food journal to see what you are eating, how often, how much, and when. There are other means by which you can get some of these things¬†you really like back into your diet, you just have to be more aware and conscious of the fact that using grain free products doesn’t make it diet friendly either. You simply have to consider them as treats.

So what’s the answer you ask?

Well, eating primarily a natural diet of most fruits, most vegetables, and protein is basically all you need or that your body needs. There are many benefits of eating a simple diet without all the extras we have become so accustomed to eating since childhood.

When I went on my elimination diet – it was to purge my system so that I could start with a “clean” base. There wasn’t much I could eat, but what I did eat helped to get me to a point where I could start over. Just making sure that I didn’t just randomly add foods back in. It was a very measured approach and actually took longer to reintroduce foods than the actual elimination diet took.

The foods I could eat were – salad greens (lettuce, romaine, spinach, arugula, kale), carrots, cucumbers, lemons/juice, some olive oil, lamb, turkey, very small amount of rice, sweet potatoes, tapioca, jello, apples, pears, grapes, green tea. That was pretty much the diet for 30 days. Now that doesn’t seem like a lot, but it was enough to keep me going. Notice what’s missing? Dairy, eggs, chicken, pork, beef, all but one grain (including corn), tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, avocado, bananas – these foods are all linked in some way to allergies or intolerances.

This was enough but tough to do, but I did it because at the time I had been through a serious allergic reaction to something that couldn’t be pinpointed, so got rid of what is known to be a problem. It turned out to be the best thing I could have ever done, but started me on this road.

The stages I went through were – elimination/reintroduction (doctor induced 30 day elimination diet), gluten-free (tried all kinds of grain type flours that were not wheat based), Whole 30 (a strict 30-day Paleo program), Paleo, and Autoimmune Paleo (a very strictly modified Paleo diet eliminating all night-shade fruits and vegetables).

Paleo is really the name of the lifestyle I have adopted, but at a much more severe level – that being the Autoimmune Paleo Protocol, which eliminates a lot more than just bread. It basically gets rid of all of the 8 known serious allergens/intolerances from your diet.

  • Milk.
  • Eggs.
  • Peanuts.
  • Tree nuts (such as almonds, cashews, walnuts)
  • Fish (such as bass, cod, flounder)
  • Shellfish (such as crab, lobster, shrimp)
  • Soy.
  • Wheat.
  • Oh, and Sugar, of course!

I have also had to remove any foods connected with a Latex allergy, which unfortunately¬†also includes removing avocado, banana, carrot, celery, chestnut, kiwi, melons, papaya, raw potato and tomato, as I found these to also be an issue in my diet. I’ve been trying to reintroduce some of these foods once in a while to see what reactions I have, but ultimately they cause me issues and have to back off once again.

So, eliminating all these foods has had an accumulated affect of a 45 lb. weight loss over these 3 years.

Unfortunately, I’ve had not very good results in the reintroduction of foods since being on the AIP protocol. My body reacts severely when I do try to reintroduce, then I am set back. This protocol can sometimes take anywhere from 30 days to 3-4 years before successful reintroductions can be made. I guess my body is a bit stubborn!

I’m just presenting how my weight management has occurred over the past few years and am not in any way suggesting you take this approach. But if you are suffering with weight issues, it might be a thought and might just help you if your current “diet” and exercise plan are not giving you the results you are looking for.

One other note – I do not weigh myself very often. If I do it’s probably about once a month. I can feel how my clothes fit and can tell just by that if I’m losing more weight. Also, I didn’t change anything in my exercise routine.

Oh, by the way, I’ve had to buy all new clothes to accommodate this new body I’m in, so that is a bonus for me!
