CBD Oil Benefits and Uses

I know I just recently posted about CBD oil and wanted to give you some more information on its uses and benefits so you can help yourself or someone you love make the right decision about it.

CBD oil is made from the Cannabis or marijuana plant (Cannabis sativa) and is only one of about 104 chemical compounds of those plants.

THC is the psychoactive cannabinoid found in these plants and is what actually causes the HIGH sensation you get when taking it, unlike CBD which doesn’t cause that affect at all. What CBD oil does do, however, is help alleviate pain and other symptoms without any mind-altering affects.

CBD oil is made by extracting the CBD from the plant and diluting it with carrier oils such as coconut, hemp seed, or olive oils. Some producers actual try to mask the taste of the oil with chocolate, peppermint, vanilla and other flavorings because the taste may be offensive to some. For me, I like it without flavorings – just plain old olive oil for me works very well.

Lately, there have been a lot of scientific studies being conducted to confirm what CBD does affect in the human body such as chronic pain and anxiety. Following are some of the health benefits associated with taking CBD oil that are backed by scientific evidence.

Pain Relief – Marijuana has been used since as far back as 2900 B.C. for pain relief. The bodies own Endocannabinoid System helps regulate sleep, appetite, pain and immune system responses.

It also helps reduce inflammation (a main cause of pain). A combination of CBD and THC can help treat those suffering with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Arthritis. There is a spray called Sativex (approved in several countries) to treat pain related to MS. Studies have proven significant improvement in pain, walking, muscle spasms, movement, also pain at rest and sleep in those with MS and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).

Reduce Anxiety and Depression – These disorders can have serious impacts on health and well-being. Depression is the biggest contributor to disability worldwide and anxiety is rated sixth.

These ailments are usually treated with drugs that have other serious side effects such as drowsiness, agitation, insomnia, sexual dysfunction and headaches. And some medications can be and are addictive leading to substance abuse!

Studies have shown a reduction in anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort in speech performance when given CBD oil. It has also proven to be a safe treatment for insomnia and anxiety in children with PTSD. So we can assume it acts on the brain’s receptors for serotonin which regulates mood and social behavior. Some believe that CBD oil can be harmful to children, when the opposite is the case. THC on the other hand can be harmful on young people who use and abuse it by smoking. Yes CBD does change the brain chemistry, but if used the right way it will affect it positively, not negatively.

Alleviates Cancer-Related Symptoms – A combination of CBD and THC has been shown to help reduce the affects of chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting in those having cancer treatments. It has also helped reduce pain when pharmaceutical medication did not.

CBD has been shown to have anti-cancer properties in animal studies and has also been found to cause cell death in human breast cancer cells (that’s a big one), and can inhibit the spread of aggressive breast cancer cells in mice studies. These studies are not conclusive and more studies in humans are needed.

Neuroprotective Properties – CBD oil may be beneficial in treating those with neurological disorders such as epilepsy and MS. These studies are fairly new, but have shown promising results. (Actually, the reason I started taking Medical MJ is because of my recent diagnosis of Dystonia and I do believe it is helping.)

Sativex has been proven to be a safe and effective way to reduce muscle spasticity in those with MS where pharmaceutical drugs haven’t helped.

CBD oil has had significantly reduced seizure activity in children with Dravet syndrome (a complex childhood epilepsy). However, some had adverse reactions (convulsions, fever and diarrhea).

It has been shown to improve quality of life and sleep quality for people suffering with Parkinson’s disease. Some animal studies have shown a decrease in inflammation and help prevent the neuro-degeneration associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Studies in mice found that it helped prevent cognitive decline.

Could Benefit Heart Health – CBD oil has been linked with benefits in heart and circulatory system health including lowering high blood pressure as well as stroke, heart attach and metabolic syndrome. It could be a natural treatment for high blood pressure.

Researchers believe that the stress and anxiety reducing properties of CBD are the reason for its ability to help lower blood pressure. As well, animal studies have shown the CBD may help reduce the inflammation and cell death responsible for heart disease because of its antioxidant and stress reducing properties.

Other Potential Benefits – CBD has also been studied for its benefits with other health issues such as: Antipsychotic effects (schizophrenia) by helping reduce psychotic symptoms; Substance abuse treatment by changing the brains relationship to drug addiction to morphine and heroin (also opiates); Anti-tumor effects by helping prevent the spread of breast, prostate, brain, colon and lung cancer (in animal studies); and Diabetes Prevention by significantly reducing inflammation (in diabetic mice).

More research is needed in humans before these claims can be justified, but there have been lots of non-scientific studies performed in all the above areas to prove its effectiveness. Unfortunately, because of the government’s Schedule 1 classification of marijuana, these studies have been stifled up until recently, but I’m sure with the push back from all of the states in the USA this will happen fairly rapidly and more studies will be performed to prove these points. If, as it’s been pointed out that it has been used with positive results throughout history (up until the 1930’s til now), this will change.

What about Side Effects? It seems there are a few side effects that I don’t seem to experience such as diarrhea, changes in appetite, and fatigue. Also, CBD could react with some medications. It’s always wise to have a discussion with your health care team to ensure none of these things would be a deterrent to your health.

With the changes in North American access to CBD oil, things will change fairly rapidly in the near future. So keep an eye out for new revelations in how CBD oil can help you and/or your loved ones.

I hope this information is helpful in some way. My trusted source for this has been Healthline.com, where I get a lot of my own information for my RA as well as other health related topics.  I’m also still watching the Sacred Plant videos sent to me on a regular basis by John Malenca. If you would like to join his neighborhood of watchers/listeners about the Sacred Plant, you can do so by clicking this link and adding his newsletter to your email subscriptions.

Have an amazing day and week ahead.
