Copaiba Essential Oil Benefits and Recipes

I don’t know how many of you know that I have become a huge fan of essential oils and don’t know what I would do without them any more.

Well, I’ve just found this one lately, that has become an instant favorite of mine. So I’d like to introduce you to Copaiba Essential Oil (also Copaiba Balsam Essential Oil).

(Please remember that I am not a medically trained person, and you should always check first with your medical team before doing anything with your health.)

Copaiba oil comes from South America from a tree in the family of Copaifera officinalis found in the Amazon rain-forest. It has been used by native South Americans for about 400 years. The tree itself has a tall truck and only has branches at the top. It secretes a sap (similar to maple syrup) or resin known as oleoresin which is steam distilled to create Copaiba essential oil. Copaiba oil has been called one of the most anti-inflammatory substances on earth.

Copaiba Essential Oil

Although it isn’t recommended to use most essential oils internally (unless they are food grade), this particular one is apparently safe. Used as a natural health supplement to boost health, lower systemic inflammation and also as a preventive measure against cancer. It can be added to food, drinks, and/or juices if the taste seems palatable. Do Not swallow directly as it may be harmful, but add 2 drops to a capsule and swallow the capsule, and only consume a maximum of 3 capsules a day. The effects may take time to show, but it works very similar to fish oil in lowering inflammation all over the body. If used incorrectly, it can cause stomach upset somewhat similar to food poisoning, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, or rash. It is rare to have an allergy to this oil, but if there are signs of allergy, discontinue use immediately.

The benefits of this amazing essential oil, of which there are many, are included in the following list – immune stimulant, mucus thinning, diuretic, antibacterial, disinfectant, pain killer, anti-fungal, anti-microorganism, anti-inflammatory, wound healing, skin soothing, tissue shrinking, blood pressure lowering, anti-cancer, decongestant, cooling, and nervous system calming.

For healthy skin, use Copaiba oil for acne (use 2 drops undiluted on a cotton ball and apply directly on active acne), it should not sting and if you wait for 2-3 hours you should see the acne reduce considerably. Due to the anti-inflammatory power of this oil it will reduce redness and if used daily the acne should also be less inflamed.

Eczema and psoriasis are also serious skin issues that some people are plagued by and can be helped with the use of Copaiba oil. The oleoresins in this oil help reduce the pro-inflammatory cytokines linked with chronic psoriasis. As well, the anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties are quite effective for eczema, acne, and psoriasis.

If you suffer with¬†Stretch Marks from childbirth or weight loss, massaging Copaiba oil combined with olive oil directly on the stretch marks will reduce the “depressions” in a few weeks. The stretch marks should start to fade away.

Wrinkles or sagging skin can be reduced using Copaiba oil directly on skin possibly helping boost collagen secretion and elastin to firm and tighten skin. I’ve recently added Copaiba Essential Oil to my face and neck skin regimen both morning and night and have noticed an improvement in only a short time.

For those who suffer with Varicose Veins – Copaiba oil helps improve blood circulation of veins that are close to the skin, allowing them to drain back and reduce blood pooling. It helps get rid of varicose veins so no more compression garments to trouble your legs.

The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects of Copaiba oil may help with scrapes, minor wounds, bites and burns, by helping with pain, swelling, and the spread of possibly dangerous infection. It has been shown to be effective against drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus by inhibiting the growth of the bacteria.

Studies have shown that the anti-inflammatory effect of beta-caryophyllene in Copaiba oil may help decrease the spread of cancer. It may have anti-proliferative effects against the spread of malignant cancer cells into surrounding tissue. It has been found to kill MCF-7 breast cancer cells, better than the highly used chemotherapy drug Doxorubicin. Also another study found beta-caryophyllene can potentially inhibit solid tumor growth and the spread of lymph nodes in mice with melanoma.

Copaiba oil is used as a natural pain reliever due to the beta-caryophyllene and may be used to treat chronic, debilitating painful conditions, such as headache, muscular cramping, arthritis, back and joint pain and sciatica, gout, lupus, and fibromyalgia.

When generously applied to the lower abdominal area, it can help with bed-wetting issues in children, and adult incontinence, but toning the muscles of the bladder and urinary tract, helping to reduced incidences of these issues.

Those that have issues with hemorrhoids, bacterial or fungal infections can use Copaiba oil in a Sitz Bath. Add 8-10 drops of copaiba oil to a sitz bath to help relieve these problems. The antimicrobial properties help get rid of infections, helps improve blood circulation and helps relieve pain/itching.
