My AIP Journey

OK, so what is AIP and why is it a journey?

AIP is an acronym for Auto-immune Paleo and it’s a journey because, in my case, in order to find out what it is that is causing my body issues, it has taken about 2 years to accomplish.

When I started this blog it was so I could share with others what I have done and perhaps help them along the way.

All my life I had eaten almost everything anyone would eat – hamburgers and hot dogs in buns with mustard, ketchup and relish, tomatoes, cheese, milk, cottage cheese, tofu, corn on the cob, rice, whole wheat bread, bananas, avocados, hummus made with garbanzo beans (chick peas). I even had a glass or two of wine with dinner most nights, and socially had a drink. But this was to stop dead in its tracks.

During the summer of 2014, I was put on an Elimination diet by my allergist that started a whole world of different eating. That same summer I had surgery that was probably the reason the Rheumatoid Arthritis turned up due to body trauma.

Unfortunately, the allergist neglected to inform me on how to reintroduce foods back into my diet after the elimination phase (30 days). I found out by searching on-line and discovering JJ Virgin and her book The Virgin Diet. She goes into the reintroduction of all the classes of foods that you should “try” to reintroduce by sensitivity category. Gluten, Dairy, Eggs, Corn (my idea as it’s one of my allergies), Soy, and of course Sugar. Her book covers the Elimination of foods as well, so if you are just getting started, this would be a good place to start. It turned out that all but the eggs seemed to be issues for me, consequently I turned to a Gluten Free diet and thought this would be good enough.

It wasn’t until the Fall of that year, while in Florida, things started to change for the worse. In January 2015, I investigated and began a Whole 30 program (a Paleo plan) that seemed to help with how I felt for a little while, but I still wasn’t feeling all that great. That summer, I was in a lot of pain and lost all the strength in my hands. It wasn’t until July of 2015 that they actually diagnosed me with RA. I was finally able to get in to see a Rheumatologist, who wanted to start me on Methotrexate. Unfortunately, that was a bust as it turned out I’m allergic to the medication. We winter in Florida and I was not up to taking it with me to “see if it worked”, so decided to start following the AIP Protocol that I had read so much about through Sarah Ballantyne – The Paleo Approach: Reverse Autoimmune Disease and Heal Your Body, and Dr. Amy Myers – The Autoimmune Solution – Prevent and Reverse the Full Spectrum of Inflammatory Systems and Diseases. Within a few days on the Myers Way protocol, I started to feel a whole lot better.

I had been taking Tylenol Arthritis since the beginning of pain in my hands (about 5 months) three times a day, my ulcer decided to flare-up (it tended to twice a year, but this was more than just a “normal” flare-up). A good friend introduced me to a Turmeric recipe. This gem was what helped me to stop taking any pain medication at all, which has been since January 2016. All you have to do is like hot tea and you are all set with a natural pain medication!

Please Note, if you are taking blood thinners, do not use this Turmeric recipe without talking to your health care practitioner.

And so, I started using the turmeric recipe in my tea, along with some coconut milk, and cinnamon – no honey. Well, it was a bit gritty, so I decided to start making a Chai Tea, that I have customized for me.

I take this tea twice a day. The Green Tea has loads of antioxidants and nutrients to help with your health. You may not like the taste of the tea on its own, but by adding the Chai ingredients, it will help you enjoy it much more, plus get the benefits of the turmeric.

Over the years I’ve noticed that I get serious reactions to latex. Anytime I have to wear a bandage that contains latex, or use any latex products I react badly with very red, itching skin. Oh well, that was just an inconvenience, I thought, until I also started to notice that I was having issues with foods I considered “safe”. That was not the case. I have discovered through more investigating that there is a list of foods that are related to latex that you should avoid as well.

I love my smoothies and had them on a regular basis. My ingredient list included bananas, avocados, coconut milk or water, blueberries, strawberries, spinach, kale, mangoes. Well, as it turns out, one list for latex allergy cross-reactive foods includes but is not limited to – bananas, avocados, kiwi, papaya, grapes, watermelon, tomato, potato, celery, chestnut, also may include spinach, broccoli, apples, pumpkin, legumes and beans, mint, cinnamon and mango. What a shock! Now I have had to eliminate a lot more food that I hadn’t expected, to which I had been reacting. I’m continually learning about food and the way your body can react to what you eat.
